Yesterday the comms minister, Lord Carter, unveiled a draft strategy which the government hopes will ensure the UK keeps pace with tech change and grows its digital economy over the next five years and beyond.

The interim Digital Britain report sets out a pledge of universal broadband access by 2012 at speeds of up to 2Mbps via fixed and wireless networks.
The final word will come in the summer when the full report is published.

Banks: ID cards ‘have been stripped of useful features’

While the Home Office is hoping ID cards will one day be used for everything from claiming benefits to opening bank accounts, the UK financial services industry has its doubts over how useful the cards will prove.

The UK payments association Apacs – whose members includes the UK’s major high street banks – is worried that security features that would have made the card useful for checking identity in large money transfers and online transactions have been stripped from the scheme.

Barbour waxes lyrical about new retail system

Outdoor clothing retailer Barbour has signed a £1.5m deal with retail software company Lawson for an enterprise ERP system.

The retailer, which is best known for it waxed country jackets, has been using a bespoke green-screen application created in the 1980s to manage stock levels and supply chain operations.
