Compatibility View is a toggle button that appears on the toolbar when some elements of a website don’t render properly. It automatically forces a change of rendering engine from IE 8 to IE 7 to keep the page looking as it should.

Here, you can see that although Microsoft’s own home page views correctly, Google.com and even Download.com both get the Compatibility View treatment as indicated by the presence of the broken-page icon.

Cheat sheet: Windows 7

Ah, Windows 7. I remember that – didn’t it come after Windows 6? There was never a Windows 6, you fool. Windows 7 is the follow-up to Microsoft’s current desktop operating system, Windows Vista.

Oh right, is that the one that no one liked?
That might be a bit unfair but it does seem that businesses in particular have failed to embrace Vista, with take-up continuing to be sluggish more than two years after its launch.

Retailers still failing on wireless security

Retailers are dragging their feet when it comes to ensuring wireless networks are safe from hackers, a new survey has claimed.

Thousands of wireless access points (APs) in busy retail centres across the globe are wide open to wireless data-robbers, an annual Motorola wireless security survey found. Almost a third (32 per cent) of 7,940 APs probed were found to be unencrypted, a six percentage point rise on the year before.
